#15: Peritas
King Alexander the Great of Macedon owned a massive hound named Peritas during his military conquests in the fourth century BCE. Historian Plutarch wrote that Alexander raised the animal from a young puppy. During the battle of Malli in India, enemy forces surrounded Alexander inside a fortress. Peritas charged the attacking soldiers and held them off, which bought enough time for the royal guards to rescue the wounded king. Alexander named a city in India after his favorite dog to honor his memory.
