#11: Barry
Monks at the Great St. Bernard Hospice in the Swiss Alps bred large dogs to protect their monastery and rescue stranded travelers. A male Saint Bernard named Barry worked along the dangerous mountain pass from 1800 until 1812. He possessed an incredible sense of smell and successfully located 40 individuals who were lost in deep winter snowbanks. Barry famously carried an unconscious young boy on his back to safety. A museum in Bern preserved his remains, and a statue honors his rescue record today.
