Let’s get one thing straight: dogs haven’t just sat at our feet; they’ve been right in the thick of history, wagging tails and changing the world, one slobbery rescue or memorable adventure at a time. Think you know all their stories? Think again. This roundup spills the best-kept secrets and wildest tales behind history’s most celebrated canines. Dive in and see which pup steals the show; you won’t want to miss a single bark.

#1: Hachiko

Professor Hidesaburo Ueno adopted a golden-brown Akita in 1924 and named him Hachiko. Every single afternoon, the dog walked to Shibuya Station in Tokyo to meet his owner after the daily commute. Sadly, the professor suffered a fatal brain hemorrhage at work in May 1925 and never returned on the train. Hachiko continued to show up at the exact same platform every day for the next nine years. Local commuters began feeding him, and newspaper articles eventually transformed the loyal pet into a national sensation before his death in 1935.
