R.E.M. became one of alternative rock’s most influential bands during the 1980s and 1990s. Bassist Mike Mills contributed far more than rhythm parts. His backing vocals enriched the group’s melodies, while his songwriting and multi-instrumental skills strengthened their music. Mills also occasionally stepped forward as a lead vocalist.
