#21: Chill Wills Risque Advertisement
When: 33rd Academy Awards, 1961
In the cutthroat world of Oscar campaigning, actors have pulled out all the stops to secure that coveted golden statuette. Chill Wills was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in 1961’s The Alamo. Wills was determined to win, enlisting the help of publicity agent W.S. ‘Bow-Wow’ Wojciechowicz.
But Bow-Wow’s tactics were slightly unconventional…His over-the-top “For Your Consideration” ads, featuring cringeworthy quotes and photos of the entire Alamo cast, sparked outrage among Academy members. Wills’ desperate bid for glory backfired spectacularly, with John Wayne even distancing himself from the debacle. Ultimately, Spartacus‘ Peter Ustinov took home the Oscar, leaving Wills and his ill-fated campaign in the dust.
