A locust swarm does not begin as one great cloud. It begins with conditions. Rainfall can create vegetation, food can support population growth, and crowding can push solitary insects into a gregarious phase. Their bodies and behavior change. They become more attracted to one another, more mobile, and capable of forming bands or swarms that move across large areas in search of food. The result can be destructive for farms and communities, so it should not be treated as a pretty spectacle.
