Throughout history, some religious books have survived against incredible odds, offering us a look into faith and cultures of the past that that would otherwise be unknown to us. Many of these manuscripts are incredibly old, beautifully crafted, and only exist in a handful of copies. This article explores a list of ancient and mysterious religious texts, from sacred Christian gospels to Buddhist and Jewish manuscripts, to understand their meaning and why they are so important.

#1: The Codex Gigas

The Codex Gigas, or “The Devil’s Bible,” is a 13th-century manuscript from Bohemia. It is the largest surviving medieval manuscript, weighing 165 pounds. It contains the full Latin Bible along with historical, medical, and magical texts. Legend says a monk made a deal with the Devil to finish it overnight. Now in Sweden’s National Library, its size and mysterious origins make it a fascinating medieval artifact.
