#18: Debuts Solo Radio Show (1947)
Groucho launched You Bet Your Life on ABC Radio in 1947, turning a quiz show into a showcase for his quick wit and improvisation. Contestants could win cash if they said the “secret word,” often delivered by a descending toy duck. George Fenneman served as his patient’s straight man. The show’s popularity led to a simultaneous NBC TV broadcast in 1950.
