For nearly two decades, American Horror Story has kept us glued to our screens, from the haunted halls of Murder House to the chaos of Double Feature and beyond. However, the show’s real stars aren’t ghosts, witches, or murderous clowns. They’re the actual people and events that Murphy and company keep resurrecting. Fact is often scarier than fiction, and AHS knows it. We’ve ranked each season’s real-life inspirations by how faithfully (or hilariously) they stuck to the truth. Let’s separate fact from fiction, one season at a time. And tell us: which chapter had you googling “wait, that actually happened?”
#21: Elizabeth Báthory – “Checking In” (2015)
The Countess in Hotel takes a massive leap from grim history into full-on vampire fantasy. The real story follows Elizabeth Báthory, a Hungarian noblewoman accused in the early 1600s of torturing and murdering young women. Later accounts, likely embellished, claimed she bathed in their bl*od to keep her youth, creating the “Bl**d Countess” legend. Historians now question some of the wildest parts of that tale, including the massive victim counts. Hotel borrows her name, her noble status, and the bl*od mythology, then simply turns her into an immortal.
