A Queen in Service of the British Army, 1945
A little-known fact about Queen Elizabeth II is that she served her country during the second world war. While other royals were doing charitable work on the state side, Elizabeth decided to join the British army, and serve as a mechanic and military truck driver.
In this picture, you can see the 19-year-old future queen standing next to her trusted truck, awaiting orders during the last few months of the war, during the spring of 1945. Elizabeth was the only female in her family to serve during the second world war, a fact she often belittles today.
