Clara Barton
Clara Barton was known as “the angel of the battlefield” because she risked her life behind enemy lines during the Civil War. Barton appealed to the public for donations, medical supplies, food and relief articles. She prodded leaders in the government and the army to let her bring her voluntary services and supplies to the scenes of battle and field hospitals.
So, it was no surprise when Clara Barton mobilized an army of her own. She called it The American Red Cross.
