Jane Kendeigh
During World War II, some 350,000 U.S. women served in the armed forces. Jane “Candy” Kendeigh is one of them. She was the first U.S. Navy flight nurse to fly an evacuation mission to an active battlefield. Kendeigh and her team of nurses and pilots evacuated thousands of wounded Marines and sailors to safety from Iwo Jima. Her specialty was crash procedures and inflight critical care.
Of the 1,176,048 military patients evacuated on these dangerous flights throughout the war, only 46 died en route.
