#6: Where Did You Go, ALCO?

ALCO started as Duckwall’s in 1901, and the first ALCO store opened in 1966. What does ALCO stand for? Who knows? What we do know is that if you lived in the Midwest, you probably had an ALCO somewhere near you. They were like those old-school Walmarts that sold a variety of stuff. Competition, acquisitions, and bankruptcies are to blame for ALCO’s failure to exist, as they closed their final store in 2015.
