#15: Crossed Out

S.H. Kress & Co. was founded in 1896 by Samuel Henry Kress. These department stores were well-known for looking gorgeous, with the buildings being landmarks in cities to this very day. Unfortunately, the store lost that identity in 1964 when it was bought by Genesco, Inc. Genesco focused more on shopping malls throughout the ‘60s and ‘70s and began liquidating these stores over time. In 1981, McCrory Stores bought any remaining stores, and when McCrory Stores shut down in 2001, so went Kress.
