#14: A Sunken Ship

Korvette was founded in 1948 as E.J. Korvette. The E and J stand for Eugene and Joe, the names of its founders. “Korvette” comes from an alteration of the naval warship Corvette. This discount store was big in the following decades and even had its own membership program, a revolution for the time. By the ’70s, though, the store was floundering due to poor management and a changing shopper landscape. In 1980, this Korvette was retired.
