Dunkirk, France
The Dunkerque Carnival lasts thirty days. It reaches its peak for three festive days around Mardi Gras. Originally, it started as a feast for fishermen, but over the years, it has turned into a spectacular carnival. Groups of fishermen wearing traditional yellow raincoats compete to make the most noise. The Mayor can be seen throwing kippers at the crowd from his balcony. It’s known to be France’s loudest carnival.
The Carnival procession is known as the Bande and includes musicians, huge parade puppets, and spectators singing traditional songs. The three days of music, crazy costumes, and endless colorful umbrellas conclude with a party at Place Jean Bart with a rigid. This includes a jig and carnival-goers getting down on their knees and holding hands while singing a song in honor of naval hero Jean Bart.
