Crop Over, Barbados
Crop Over in Barbados is a tradition and a celebration of the island’s colonial past when sugar cane was the king. Crop Over highlights the culture and history of Barbados and artistic talents of the Bajan. The celebration is filled with music, dance, tons of local arts & crafts, folk concerts, art exhibitions, calypso, street parties, local food, and Barbadian rum.
It starts with the Opening Gala where the ceremony of the Last Canes takes place. The festival King and Queen of the Crop are crowned. This honor is given to the male and female cane cutters with the most productive output of the season. Crop Over events start in May with the famous Community Cavalcades, a series of musical shows showcasing local talent. The Grand Kadooment is when the epic masquerade parade is held.
