#9: Clue Turned Its Ending Into a Gimmick

Buying a ticket did not guarantee that two friends across town would discover the same murderer. Paramount sent three versions of Clue (1985) to different theaters, each containing a separate solution to the evening’s collection of bodies. In one, Miss Scarlet is responsible. Another assigns the crimes to Mrs. Peacock. The third spreads the guilt among several guests while giving Tim Curry’s Wadsworth a very different identity. A fourth ending was also filmed but removed. The scheme reflected the board game, where the culprit changes each time people play, and the studio hoped curious viewers would pay to see the movie again.
