The joke was supposed to be that inspirational sports movies lie. Average Joe’s reaches the championship, faces Globo Gym, and loses. According to writer-director Rawson Marshall Thurber’s original plan, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (2004) would simply stop after White Goodman’s team celebrates, denying Peter LaFleur and his friends the miraculous comeback audiences had been trained to expect. It was abrupt, cynical, and perfectly consistent with the title’s exaggerated promise of an underdog triumph. Preview crowds hated it.
