#14: Sambo’s (1957-2020)
Sambo’s was an American diner founded in 1957. Its name and imagery come from the book The Story of Little Black Sambo. Most of the locations did not appear to have a buffet, so let me know if you ate at a Sambo’s with one! By the 1980s, it was a controversial place, with the word “Sambo” being a slur against Black people and the story itself featuring poorly aged imagery. The last location in Santa Barbara, California, was rebranded to “Chad’s” in 2020.
