#20: Burger King’s “Women Belong in the Kitchen” Campaign
The actual program behind the campaign was designed to create more opportunities for women in professional kitchens. Burger King UK wanted to fund scholarships for female employees interested in culinary careers, where women remained underrepresented. Unfortunately, the announcement began with the sentence “Women belong in the kitchen.” Follow-up posts explained the intention immediately, but screenshots of those first five words traveled faster than the context ever could. The company initially defended the provocative approach before deleting the tweet and apologizing. This happened on International Women’s Day in 2021, which made the choice of opening line even harder to ignore.
