#5: Eastern Chipmunk
The Eastern Chipmunk, Tamias striatus, was first cataloged in 1799 and scurries across forests in the northeastern US. Adults reach about five inches, plus a fluffy tail, with five dark stripes running down their backs. Their famous cheek pouches stretch to haul seeds and nuts back to underground burrows stocked like tiny pantries. Quick, alert, and sometimes bold, they even inspired Chip and Dale.
