#2: Eastern Spotted Skunk
Spilogale putorius ranges across the central and eastern United States, but you rarely see one. First cataloged in 1797, these skunks are smaller than their striped cousins, standing only about 8 inches at the shoulder. Their coat features broken black-and-white stripes that zigzag down the back and tail. Nocturnal by habit, they dig dens or use abandoned burrows for shelter.
