#1: Wings (1927)
Wings tells the story of two American pilots, Jack Powell and David Armstrong, who enlist during World War I and face rivalry in both love and combat. Richard Arlen and Clara Bow starred, with Arthur Lake in a supporting role. The film’s aerial sequences were groundbreaking, shot with real planes and pilots performing dangerous maneuvers over California skies. It won the first-ever Academy Award for Best Picture in 1929 and also took home the Oscar for Best Engineering Effects. The production involved hundreds of extras, authentic military gear, and innovative camera rigs that brought the dogfights to life on screen.
