What haven’t been said about New York city? Artists have serenaded it, T.V shows have put it on a pedestal, but how much do you really know about the Big Apple? From the statue of Liberty to the Empire State Building and Central Park, New York has some of the most important landmarks in the U.S, but it is so much more than the buildings and parks that comprise it. New York is also an important cultural and culinary gem people make a pilgrimage to visit. It has so much to offer, and so it’s easy to lose yourself when visiting and get caught up in all the tourist baits. If you’re visiting New York and you want to avoid all the banal tourist attractions, we made a list of the most unique places you ought to pay a visit.

Chinatown in Queens
One of the things the Big Apple, and Brooklyn in particular, are most known for is pizza. With all due respect to Italy, Brooklyn pizza is probably the best pizza in the world – it has the exact right ratio of cheese, sauce and toppings, and don’t forget the flap! An attraction that you really don’t want to miss in New York is one of Brooklyn’s Pizza Tours. You can also explore independently all the great pizza places Brooklyn has to offer (and there are plenty of them), but a tour allows you to try all the best places in one day, and under the patronage of some of the most acclaimed pizza places.

Mmuseumm
New York has its fair share of museums, as the culture capital of the U.S should. All of them are impressive, but some of them are also quite touristic, and that somewhat ruins the experience for some museum lovers. If you’re looking for an interesting, modern museum that isn’t as crowded as, say, the MoMA, Mmuseumm might be the right choice for you. Mmuseumm is not the ordinary museum you know and love, but more of a unique art exhibition – it opened in 2012 and is located in lower Manhattan. If you’re intrigued, you can read more about it on their website, or better yet – check out the place next time you’re in the city!
Tom’s restaurant
Also known as the Seinfeld diner. This one is for the sworn Seinfeld fans out there: The coffee shop frequently visited in the 90s popular sitcom is a real New York restaurant. Located on Broadway street in Manhattan, the restaurant was opened in the 1940s and operates to this day, under the name “Tom’s Restaurant.” In the show, the name “Tom’s” was cut off from the photos, but other than that, the place is exactly the same. The Diner’s star appearance in Seinfeld wasn’t its only brush with fame – Suzanne Vega’s hit song Tom’s Diner was written about this and no other.
Brooklyn flea
Brooklyn Flea, much like the name suggests, is a flea market – but not any flea market, it has been named the best flea market in the U.S and one of the one best markets in the world. Brooklyn Flea started operating in 2008, and operates in Williamsburg and DUMBO between April and October. Okay, so it’s not so clandestine, being the top flea market in the U.S makes it pretty popular, but if you’re a vintage freak – it’s worth a visit!
