#18: Spin City – Mike Flaherty (1996)
As New York City’s deputy mayor, Mike Flaherty occupies a powerful position, but public service does not necessarily provide the kind of salary associated with Manhattan luxury. Mike nevertheless maintains a comfortable urban lifestyle while dressing impeccably, dining out, socializing regularly, and navigating romantic relationships without displaying much financial anxiety. His position would certainly pay well compared with the average worker, and his demanding schedule leaves relatively little time for extravagant hobbies, making his finances more believable than those of many sitcom protagonists. Still, Spin City portrays government work with the polished lifestyle and flexibility of a high-level corporate career. Mike and his colleagues spend enormous amounts of time managing political disasters, personal relationships, and office comedy while somehow maintaining both professional success and active lives outside City Hall. The series was never interested in examining municipal salary structures, of course.
