1990s TV Characters Whose Finances Made Zero Sense

The Bundys may provide the funniest financial contradiction on the entire list because Married… with Children constantly insists that Al Bundy is practically broke. He supports Peggy, Kelly, and Bud on the income he earns selling women’s shoes at a shopping mall, while Peggy rarely shows any interest in getting a conventional job. Yet this supposedly impoverished single-income family owns a detached two-story suburban home in Chicago, has a car, maintains multiple televisions, and somehow survives decades of routine household expenses. The show repeatedly jokes about an empty refrigerator, unpaid bills, cheap meals, and Al’s miserable salary, making the discrepancy impossible to ignore. Housing was obviously more affordable during the period than it is today, but a shoe salesman comfortably qualifying for and maintaining that household would still require favorable circumstances the series never seriously explains. Of course, realism is deliberately beside the point.
