It may be hard to believe, but the famous Hollywood sign actually used to read Hollywoodland. This is the sign from 1923, when real estate developer H.J. Whitely decided to advertise his new development with a sign.
Developers decided to change the name of the development, eventually changing the name of the area to Hollywood. They went on to change the sign to Hollywood as well in 1949.
