The Iconic Bus 142 Has Vanished from Sight
In a unique mission in June 2020, the Alaska National Guard employed the brute force of a Chinook helicopter to airlift the infamous Bus 142 from its rustic resting place on the Stampede Trail. The extraction followed a series of tragic incidents and numerous rescue operations which had ignited heated debates about the bus’s future. Despite its notoriety, the bus had become a significant landmark, and its departure evoked mixed feelings among the locals. The bus now resides in the Alaska Museum, a move that had been anticipated for months after the local mayor reluctantly signed a resolution requesting its removal. In a poignant conversation with The New York Times, the mayor admitted his sorrow at seeing the iconic Bus 142 leave its longtime home.

In the early 1960s, a bus was dragged deep into the wilderness by construction workers who used it as temporary housing while constructing a nearby road. A year later, they left it behind, transforming it into a silent, rusty monument, largely unnoticed except for the infrequent visits by hunters or locals. The bus remained in relative obscurity until the appearance of Chris McCandless. Now, with the bus no longer there, one ponders whether adventure seekers continue to brave the perilous journey to its former location.
