A Hundred Years of Fashion: Fashion Trends From 1920 to 2020

February 10, 2017 by Rebecca Rand

1994: The one and only safety pin dress

In 1994, British actress Elizabeth Hurley wore one of the most memorable dresses to this day, and in a way, this dress catapulted her fame and popularity, and you can see why. At the time, Hurley wasn’t yet a big name in the entertainment business and was looking for a designer house that would lend her a dress, to accompany Hugh Grant on the red carpet.

The daring dress, designed by Versace, isn’t your typical little black dress, since, well, it’s held together by oversized safety pins. On the face of it, the revealing black dress sounds like a disaster, but somehow it works. Fitting with the spirit of the times, the style of the dress, according to Versace, was “neo-punk” – inspired by the punk culture.
