A Hundred Years of Fashion: Fashion Trends From 1920 to 2020

February 10, 2017 by Rebecca Rand

1999: Tube tops

The strapless top of the late 1990s and early 2000s was almost as controversial as the hot pants of the 1970s. It was given the very appropriate name “tube tops,” since it’s designed like a tube – a rather small garment that covers the upper torso. The tube tops originally appeared in the fifties and later in the seventies, but its 1999 comeback was marked in the pages of fashion history.

Tube tops never really went out of fashion, but their place as the go-to outfit for young girls was replaced by other, new and shiny trends. Tube tops were so controversial, that some schools around the country banned girls from wearing them, as they did not comply with the school’s dress code. Perhaps that’s part of the reason for their decline in popularity.
