A Hundred Years of Fashion: Fashion Trends From 1920 to 2020

February 17, 2017 by Miranda Hill

1969: The future is here

Of course, 70 years later, we know there was nothing futuristic about these outfits. These futuristic outfits usually included space-y patterns and shapes, metallic-like colors and material, and geometric forms. The late sixties and early seventies saw the beginning of the space age, with designers such as Rabanne, Courrèges and Pierre Cardin inspired by the global Space Race. Something about the cold, hard, metallic look of mesh seemed futuristic at the time.

The iconic chainmail dress, an important part of the futuristic trend, is one of these fashion trends that never died, but only took a long break. In the mid-90s it was back in business when supermodels Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell brought the mesh dress to life, and in 2017, it was once again back in full velocity, when the most stylistic celebrities, such as Kendall Jenner, were caught wearing it.
