More Common Than You Think!
While uncommon, it’s not exactly rare for women to grow coarse beards and body hair. It’s estimated that between 5-17% of the female population has Hirsutism, a condition that causes male pattern hair growth in girls and women. This happens when there are excess male hormones (androgens) secreted into the body, usually due to a condition called PCOS.
Treatment for Hirsutism depends on the cause. Birth control pills and hormonal therapies are the most common, along with direct hair removal methods such as shaving, creams, electrolysis, and laser. However, this can be so consuming that many women are ditching the battle of the beard and just accepting themselves as they are.
