The Midwest is the nickname given to a region of the United States that includes a ranging variety of states depending on who you ask. It has the name from its location in the main U.S. being close to the middle and west of the states. States in this region include Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Indiana but there are plenty of others and sometimes it expands out towards Wyoming and Pennsylvania depending on who you ask.

These states have an interesting and rich history as well as different reasons to be known or main industries. Here are some good fun facts about the Midwest region of the United States to enrich your knowledge of these states.

So many important or loved inventions first began in this region of the United States. Some common treats such as Twinkies started here, and the list of inventions that began or fully occurred within the states of this region is quite long. A majority of people in the Midwest tend to live in smaller towns and rural areas. There are a handful of bigger cities throughout the region, but overall it tends to be smaller town areas than you’d think even though most of us think of cities like Minneapolis, Chicago, Des Moines, and more.

Money comes through and into these states in a variety of ways and has progressed quite interestingly over the years. The quick and easy transport of goods via the Mississippi River which passes through the Midwest as well as the Great Lakes makes for bigger industry growth. Some industries here include oil, mechanical and business, tourist, farming, and more.

Many people in the Midwest have some big values in their lives that dictate how they interact with others and behave. This has something to do with the religious presence in this region but also to do with small town mentality and historical influences. Values in this region include the importance put on family, heavy emphasis on being kind, and more.

Food

Food is quite complex of a topic when it comes to regions like this. It’s considered quite important to most individuals and families in the region to be able to cook, pass down recipes within a family, bond over food, and more. There’s also a really unique type of food served in the Midwest as far as local recipes and restaurants go.

While there are plenty more tidbits to learn about the Midwestern part of this country, these can give you some food for thought on what you know surrounding these states or the Midwest as a whole.
