1. FAMILY IDENTIFICATION

Family is the main source of identity. Large and extended families live together in large compounds with apartments for male sons and their families.

Visits are mostly unannounced.  Yet, homes are always ready to receive such guests with food, sweets, and Arabic or Turkish coffee. Guests are given utmost care and hospitality.

3. WOMEN’S VIRTUE HIGHLY VALUED

Family honor is of utmost value.  And such honor is mostly reflected in the virtue of the women in the family.  For that reason, a virtuous woman is highly valued by her family.

4. THE NEWBORN FUSS

Well wishers visit new parents for several weeks!  During such visits, a traditional dish called mughli is served with coffee or tea.  It is a pudding made with Somalia flour, sugar, and cinnamon, topped with fresh nuts.

5. ARRANGED MARRIAGES

In rural areas, marriages are basically arranged.  The women play the most important roles in arranging and arranged marriages.  However, even in arranged marriage, the would-be bride and groom, especially the groom must give final consent.

6. LARGE WEDDING ATTENDANCES

Weddings in Palestine are elaborate occasion!  In fact, weddings in rural areas typically last for three whole days.  And in most cases, such weddings are attended by the entire village.

During funerals, people drink bitter and unsweetened coffee. This may be purely symbolic, because funerals are bitter occasions.  Black dress features prominently in mourning for both men and women.

The society is patriarchal.  The father is the head of the family.  But it is generally known that the women serve as the glue that keeps the family bond intact.

9. A MAJOR HOLIDAY

Eid al Adha, the feast of the sacrifice, is a major celebration.  This takes place at the end of annual Hajj.  An animal is usually sacrificed and the meat shared extensively.

10. MAIN MEAL OF DAY

In the country, main meal is usually eaten at two or three in the afternoon. And pita bread is usually part of every meal.

Drinking tea or coffee is a major social activity for men.  At the end of social conversations and business deals, several cups would have been drunk.
