1. INDIRECT COMMUNICATION

The people of Palau prefer the indirect form of communication.  “It’d be nice to be punctual today” rather than “I need to go now and be punctual today!”

2. ALWAYS ACCEPT INVITES

It is viewed as polite to say “Yes” when you mean “No” and vice versa.  When invited to a social gathering, for example, never decline.  But you are welcome to accept and then not go.

3. “ISLAND TIME” WELCOMES LATENESS

Punctuality is only for professional, business, and school settings.  They have “island time” which means that everything happens in their own time.

4. OCCASIONS RUN LONG

Social events hardly start and end on schedule.  Such events run on and on endlessly.  In the same way, people continue arriving till the last minute.

5. EYEBROWS TALK

Palauans have a couple of gestured utterances.  For instance, they do not need to voice, “Yes.”  They can just raise their eyebrows and it would mean the same thing.

6. POINTING WITH THE LIPS

In Palau, hands and fingers are not the only means of indicating people and objects.  The lips serve just as well.  For instance, it is a practice to point at people and things with the lips.  But the hands are also used.

7. ENDURE BETEL NUTS

Betel nut has a putrid odor.  But it is acclaimed to have a better taste than its smell. People chew betel nuts in Palau.  And it usually has a bloody color that turns the lips and teeth bloody-red.  However, never comment on that habit at all.  It is viewed as a taboo.

8. NO PROBLEMS WITH CANNABIS

Cannabis or Indian Hemp is very available.  Like all over the world, possession of cannabis is illegal.  However, the Palauan law does not take issues of cannabis too seriously.

9. ANNOUNCE YOUR ARRIVAL

To the Palauan, punctuality is not such a valued thing.  However, if everyone else is at a meeting before you get there, announce your arrival as soon as you enter.
