1. STARING IS COMMON

Nicaraguan people see nothing wrong in staring.  Staring at foreigners is common. This is especially so in the rural areas.  But that is not to say that it is absent in the cities also.

2. POINTING WITH LIPS

People hardly point at things or other people with their hands.  They do it with their lips. They pout their lips and turn it towards the thing or person in question.

3. SPEAK WITH THE NOSE

In Nicaragua, there are a number of things you can “say” without necessarily voicing them. For example, you don’t need to voice, “I don’t understand” or “What are you saying?”  You only need to crinkle you nose!

The people have a number of taboos that people from other lands might inadvertently break from habit. For example, it is taboo to take shoes off at a meeting. This has the same view as putting feet up on a chair or desk.

When a guest visits, the woman of the house has a role cut out for her by society. It is always a must for the woman of the household to provide for the guest. This is regardless of her position outside the home.

7. WOMEN NEVER ALONE

Bars, pool halls, or pubs…these are places a woman alone is seen as looking for cheap company. For this reason, it is an oddity for a woman to go into a bar or pool hall alone…unless she does not care about her reputation.

8. RARELY TIME CONSCIOUS

It is rare for people to be on time. It is acceptable to arrive for an appointment 30 minutes or even a whole hour behind time!  And for that same reason, no one would blame you for arriving late for appointments.

9. TIME MORE THEN LIFE

Time is given freely as this popular saying indicates: “Hay mas tiempo que vida.”  It means “There is more time than life.”  People care more about relationships than they do about time.

10. MUMBO-JUMBO ANSWER

Nicaraguans have a way of answering a question without answering it. They just do a little verbal dance…voice some kind of mumbo-jumbo. That is an indication that they don’t want to go into their area with you.
