Malawi is the smallest country in the Southern Africa region. It is also the most densely populated. Here are some facts about Malawi you need to know.

*The population (by the 2008 census) stood at some 13 million.

*The density was of 139 persons /km2.

* The country got its name from its incredible sunsets!  The name Malawi comes from Chichewa for flames of fire. Such flame-like sights are visible in the incredible sunrises and sunsets that can be seen over Lake Malawi.

1. WOMEN HEAD VILLAGES

Generally, women take over the positions of village chiefs in Malawian villages.  In other countries of the world, they would be called mayors.  Men help them with secretarial duties.  This is because many of chiefs are illiterate.

2. VILLAGE HEADSHIP HEREDITARY

Village chieftaincies are traditionally passed on. Since 2000 they have been paid by their government.  Before then, only contributions of villagers were their remuneration.

3. RECORD HIGH VILLAGE LEGISLATURE

Malawi has highest concentration of legislative power in most important village matters. These include neighbors’ disputes, building permissions, and permission to marry or divorce.  Malawian legislative system has 3 levels of chiefs in this rising order:

  • Village chief
  • District chief
  • Area chief.

4. GREEN CAPITAL

Lilongwe is the country’s capital city.  Population of Lilongwe is around 4 millions.  Lilongwe is also called “green city.”  This is as a result of big green vegetation of flowers, trees, greens, and bushes covering throughout the city.

5. CURRENCY LINKED TO SUN

Malawian legal tender is the Kwacha and Tambala.  200 to 220 Malawian Kwacha (Mkw) equals 1 €uro.  100 Malawian Tambala is 1Mkw.  “Tambala” is Malawian word for sun.  That is the link!  And the sun is the main symbol on Malawian national flag.

6. SAFEST AFRINCAN COUNTRY

Malawians are really open, pure hearted, kind, and joyful people. They are never boring!  They are helpful, chatty, and friendly people who love to meet and know others.  They do so by first greeting nicely.  Malawi is the safest African country; and the average Malawian is proud of this fact.

The country is peaceful and safe to travel.  In big cities and on almost every beach you can walk alone even at night and still be safe.

7. MALAWIAN WOMEN HARDLY DRINK

In Malawi, men are reputed for drinking locally made banana beer called Chibuku.  They also drink rum, gin, and other spirits locally made of sugar canes.  Strangely, women seldom drink.

8. FISHING BY MOONLIGHT

Every full moon is like a fishing festival.  When full moon shines everybody goes fishing.  This is because it is commonly known that the biggest catches are on those nights.

9. NEW COUPLES’ RESIDENCE

After the wedding the newly-weds usually move together in joined apartment/house.  However, they only move into such a place after both sets of parents have discussed and agreed on it.  This tradition is however limited to the limited to the villages now.

10. FEMALES WEAR NO TROUSERS

In villages you will see no woman or a girl wearing trousers!  They always wear skirts which must be long enough to cover knees. As for T-shirts, these must cover bellies and backs and must not have revealing cleavage.
