Allow me to exercise some artistic license here, but I’d like to assume that she hadn’t yet resigned and was simply scoping out alternative employment when it comes out that they were planning to dismiss her regardless, and thus we find ourselves in this situation. That appears to be a significant storyline twist in the overall situation.
If you take away all of the ruse, it’s still amusing that her present work is a wonderful match for her and something she would actively seek out if she saw it in black and white like this. Perhaps this is a message that she should stick with her current position? Why would you leave one job and relocate to another if there is no additional compensation? Perhaps this is the genuine twist in the story. The employer offered higher salary to someone else for the work that she is currently doing, and she accepted!
