Gangs of New York (2002)
The New York Draft Riots, which erupted in violence in 1863, are the subject of Martin Scorsese’s film “Gangs of New York.” In spite of the fact that Scorsese spent nearly twenty years working on the film, it brought in $193 million against a $100 million budget. The picture was nominated for a total of ten Academy Awards.
Overall, “Gangs of New York” achieves a high level of accuracy in terms of historical accuracy. However, there was one small detail that was overlooked by the manufacturers. The firemen in the video are dressed in outfits that aren’t too unlike from the ones that firefighters wear today. It was not the kind of clothing that firefighters wore in 1863.
