From the Golden Globes to the Academy Awards: Best Red Carpet Dresses

February 5, 2017 by Miranda Hill

65. Natalie Portman, 2020

Award-winning actress Natalie Portman wasn’t nominated for an award this year, but she carried a great honor nonetheless, on her dress: if you look closely, you can see the cape of her golden-black dress is embroidered with the names of the women who took part in making the best movies of the year, but didn’t receive a nomination, including directors and creatives such as Little Women‘s Greta Gerwig and Lulu Wang (The Farewell).

This was in protest of this year’s list of nominations (which isn’t too different from the usual list) which is comprised of mostly men. During her red carpet interview, Portman said she “wanted to recognize the women who were not recognized for their incredible work this year” in her own way – a one-of-a-kind, custom-made Dior gown.
