The former militant has refuted the purported online endorsement of the opposition party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) by MEND, accused the party of manipulating the name of MEND to score cheap political points against the president ahead of the presidential election.
The Group said there was no way MEND would support the APC presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari, against their own son, President Jonathan.
Smith stressed further that President Jonathan’s indictment of ex-militants was not only hasty, but uncalled for, adding that there was no time former militants conspired against his government.
He admonished President Jonathan to be courageous enough to call a spade a spade and hold the north and Boko Haram responsible.
According to him, MEND is solidly behind President Jonathan’s reelection bid, but warned APC to stop using the name of MEND to win support in their poise to win the 2015 general election.
He added that ex-militants and the entire Niger Delta region still had confidence in Jonathan presidency.
Former militants, under the aegis of the Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta (MEND), also refuted President Goodluck Jonathan’s claim that the outlawed group plotted to assassinate him.
Rather, the former militants claimed that the North as well as the Islamic extremist group, Boko Haram, were the ones gunning for the life of the president since he came into office.
These claims were made on Friday in Warri, Delta State, shortly after an expanded meeting of the ex-militants.
Speaking after the meeting, former militant, Mr Godsday Smith, aka Bouninawei, denied the claims of President Jonathan that MEND plotted to kill him.
