Major ex- football stars in Nigeria, in the likes of Austine J.J. Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu and Joseph Yobo were among the sportsmen and women calling for the re-election of President Goodluck Jonathan as the number one citizen of the country.
During Jonathan campaign in Port Harcourt, River state on Wednesday, the presence of the two former Nigerian Super Eagle stars were felt as they urged Nigerians to massively vote for Jonathan come February 14 presidential election.
The transformation program of Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, has drawn the supports of sports stars across the country to the extents that various sports personalities has vowed to stand behind Jonathan for the continuity of the developmental program of his government and especially for the advancement of the welfare of Nigerian sportsmen and women.
The assembly of sportsmen and women, which converged at the National Stadium, Lagos at the weekend, included leading Nigerian Olympian, ex-internationals, elite and grassroots coaches across various sports athletes, and players representatives, club managers and sports administrators and so on.
They in one word took a firm stand for Jonathan’s second term in the office and are also calling on other compatriots to ensure that the president retains the seat.
“President Jonathan has demonstrated a unique commitment to the development of sports and has performed creditably well in the transformation of the sector in his first tenure as evidenced in his support for and the achievements of various Nigerian representatives in various continental and international championships, his exemplary initiative for reforms following the Presidential Retreat on sports and his outstanding and robust support, motivational, rewards and awards system for performing and emerging sportsmen,” they noted.
