ECOWAS Chairman and Ghanaian President, John Dramani Mahama, says the Nigerian general election coming up this Saturday is a critical democratic exercise that would test the political strength of the region.
He stated this while briefing State House correspondents after his private meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
President Mahama noted that five other countries in the region are also going to conduct elections this year, but believes if Nigeria gets it right; Africa would be on the right track to a free, fair, violence free and perfect democratic norms.
He said the Head of ECOWAS monitoring team, former President John Kuffor, is going to arrive in Nigeria on the 25 and would remain here till the election.
He noted that ECOWAS, having reviewed the preparations so far, is satisfied with the arrangement, saying their concern is that the election must be free, fair and credible.
On his meeting with Buhari, the ECOWAS leader said he had a satisfactory interaction with the APC flag bearer, adding that he would forward some of the few issues raised by Buhari to the appropriate quarters.
