Yoko Ono and John Lennon
On March 20, 1969, John Lennon married Yoko Ono. The two met in November 1966 as she was preparing to open an art exhibit called Unfinished Paintings and Objects, which was held at the Indica Gallery. They had hoped to get married on the way to Paris – on a cross-channel ferry – however; because Ono wasn’t English she couldn’t get the day visa to go across.
Instead, Lennon and Ono traveled to Gibraltar near Spain. They were married in a 10-minute ceremony performed by registrar Cecil Wheeler. Their wedding took place one week after that of fellow Beatle Paul McCartney to Linda Eastman.

Fun Fact: Yoko’s simple crepe mini-dress was viewed as a controversial choice even in the ’60s when mini skirts were in. To complete her casual look, the bride wore white knee-high socks, a felt sun hat and white tennis shoes.
