Alek Wek
When Alek Wek initially arrived on the scene, she was unlike any other character that had come before. Wek, a refugee from South Sudan who is 14 years old, has made a full recovery in London. She has a buzzcut and a dark skin tone, both of which have caused a frenzy in the media.
When MTV announced that she was their model of the year in 1997, she had just turned 19 years old. Wek wrote a memoir about her life titled “Alek: From Sudan-Flirty Refugee to International Supermodel” after she had achieved success as a top model for several years. Additionally, she was a member of the judging panel for the sixteenth season of “America’s Next Top Model.”
