Terry Crews has been a household name for a very long time, with how much variety he’s had in his career and how many people were fans of him. Crews also deals with a lot in his personal life just as many of us at home right now do. But his recent statements about seeking therapy truly proved to all of us that sometimes getting help is the best thing we can do for ourselves, and sometimes celebrities need help too just like we may in life.
Therapy is a tool that helps us to find insight to our own mind, heal from grief, learn and grow, and so much more. Many people assume it can only be for crisis times which can lead to becoming too overwhelmed before seeking help. And there is plenty of stigma surrounding mental health to prevent people from reaching out.
Often this means most people don’t get into therapy until it’s too late and their mental and physical health has taken a major toll from the upheaval in their lives. It can even lead to hospitalizations or death before a person even gets any help. And sometimes people just suffer through on their own because of lack of access to therapists.
In an interview for the Very Well Mind podcast with Amy Morin, Crews actually opened up a little about the pressure he’s faced in his career to appear tough and how he has finally been able to reach out for help through therapy to find a way to move forward and heal.
Terry is 53, and for much of his life he has had to keep up appearances in toughness for others and for himself. He talked about how much he was expected to and pushed to work hard, long, and as much as possible for success as well as for being tough enough.
He honestly spoke about this, adding that grinding like that will eat you up over time and wear you down to nothing often before you notice. He knew he was struggling but couldn’t find the ability to reach out and figure out how to improve his well-being and get out of that cycle.
This meant relearning what tough actually could mean aka teaching himself it’s okay to recognize and learn your own weaknesses alongside your strengths and keep showing up for your mental health in life. But it wasn’t easy, and while Terry says this saved him he also talks about how hard it was to get here.
Therapy was something that he grew up looking down on in life since it was seen as something useless or fake. He kept sticking to his mentality and his struggles until after his wife left him, opening up about how much he lost in that and how hard it was to come to terms with how much his own behavior led to her leaving.
The interview really was eye opening for fans and listeners of all ages and kinds, and it showed how much life can pass you by if you’re not paying attention as well as how little material items will help you if you’re struggling. Even Crews admitted he was hollow at the bottom of it all after getting everything he fought to get.
There’s not much more to know about the situation of therapy and Terry Crews for right now, mainly because he has kept quite private about what he is going through and where therapy will take him for right now. And that’s understandable to many that know how personal it can be to talk about your struggles and get some help for your mental well-being. For now, we hope the best for Crews in finding some peace and healing from what he’s struggling with in current times.
