Richard Gere and Winona Ryder
The difference in age between the two main characters in Autumn in New York has been one of the most controversial things about the movie. Richard Gere plays “Playboy” Will, a middle-aged man who falls in love with a young woman who is nearing the end of her life (Wynona Ryder). They are 22 years apart in age, which is a lot.
Even though the female lead is the daughter of an ex-lover of his, the character played by Richard Gere in the movie starts a relationship with the female lead anyway. Even stranger is that they knew each other because the woman’s grandmother is a longtime friend of Gere’s. This makes it even stranger that they should meet—characterized by not being able to be predicted and not having clear patterns.
