Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks met on the set of a sitcom in 1981 when Hanks was still married to Samanta Lewes. While Hanks and Wilson seemed to have a great relationship after they married in 1988, his relationship and divorce with Lewes were messy, to say the least.

Ellen received a lot of controversial reactions when she came out as a lesbian in 1997 both as her character in the sitcom Ellen and as herself through the Oprah Winfrey Show. However, she recovered from that shock to her career and continued to grow.
