The shock of a lifetime
George VI’s death shocked Queen Elizabeth II to her core. She knew that her father’s health was dwindling since he was a well-known smoker and had to have one of his lungs removed. However, she never thought she’d be forced onto the throne for several more years. Despite grieving the loss of her father, someone had to take reign of the kingdom, and that someone was her.
Even though she was just 25 years old at the time, Queen Elizabeth II never shied away from her royal duties. She wrote a long letter to her late father’s personal secretary, pouring her heart out on paper to talk about how her life had forever changed.
